What is a church?
“It is easy to determine when something is aflame. It ignites other material. Any fire that does not spread will eventually go out. A church without evangelism is a contradiction in terms, just as a fire that does not burn is a contradiction.” – Christian Theology in Plain Language, p. 42 I love this quote, because it begs the question: “If you cannot really have a church without evangelism as it is a contradiction in terms, then exactly what is a church without evangelism?” Well?
Innovation
I like innovation. The only magazine ever to really gain my attention through every article for the first time was Popular Science, and to this day it is the only magazine I subscribe to. I love the novelty and creative process of innovation. To that end, when it comes to the Gospel, I think there is still room for innovation. Not that the message changes, but that our approach can and should change in creative and innovative ways that make more sense. For example, take this suggestion: “Odd thoughts for missions trips, sometimes why not instead of 20 people going for 1 week have 2 or three people going for a while then rotating for the next few then the next and instead of a hotel rent a house or apartment near the missionary and have the people...
A Case Of Nasopharyngitis
I’ve been sick recently, and there’s nothing like a good sickness to make you grateful all over again for how really good you actually felt in spite of all the problems you were dealing with. Now that I’m grateful, I’m still sick. So, instead of writing a lengthy post this week, I’ll refer you to something that helped lighten my mood a little with a tale of “A Case of Nasopharyngitis,” and wherever you are, whatever your problems, if you are facing them in good health, you have at least that to be thankful for.
What I’d Like To Do
Saw this on another post and thought I’d recreate it here. Here’s a list of things I’d like to accomplish this year. Not a new year’s resolution list, but just a list that I hope to see accomplished if not this year then soon. 1. Write a book. This is actually foremost on my mind right now as I am in the actual process. Not sure if it will ever get picked up by a publisher, but it would be nice. Right now though, the focus is just on getting the material written. 2. Get interrupted more by my girls. I have a standing policy that my girls can interrupt me any time I am working in my office. As I do work from my home office a lot, there is plenty of room here for improvement. Their interruptions help me remember exactly...
Gospel from a "Spiritual Mutt"
I’ll admit it, I am a sucker for updated versions of hymns and gospel. Patty Griffin is releasing an album of mostly gospel covers. I have listened to most of it and think that the album as a whole is pretty wonderful. But the song that makes me love it is a cover of “All Creatures of Our God and King.” The traditional hymn credited to St. Francis. You can listen here (or probably a lot of places): http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=122500765
Character Reference game (CR)
So I’ve decided to try something to get readers a little more involved here on FracturedSaints. We are going to start a couple of Bible Trivia type games The Word game (TWG) and Character Reference. These games will run for 5 days assuming someone doesn’t guess the answer sooner. And the winner gets a FracturedSaints window decal, a place on the “The Word Wall of Humility”, and if you win 20 times yes you get a FracturedSaints T-Shirt. So here is the run down of the rules and how it works. This game is simple. It is played from Wednesday-Monday (at noon). Each day a clue will be give to a person from the Bible, the first person to guess the person wins! Please only 1 guess per person per day. If you place more then 1 guess per day it...
