An Inconvenient Salvation

We recently had Missions Conference at our church, and four outstanding missionaries shared their burden and their vision for missions with our people.  It was very well attended, the love offering for the missionary families was very generous, and in what seemed an all too short time, they were gone.  I am left now with the memory of another year in which our people were challenged to think outside the walls of our church and gain a vision that will lead to a burden to do something, and do more to see souls saved.  I wonder if anything will change. One of the missionaries spoke on this passage particularly: 2Corinthians 5:14 “For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for...

Christians or Followers of Christ?

I originally wrote this for Scot McKnight’s “Friday is for Friends” series. We’ve all seen the “Christian vs. Follower of Christ” ads on the Internet, no doubt. If you haven’t, they are like the Mac vs. PC ads where the PC is represented by an uptight dork with a suit and tie, and the Mac is a laid-back hipster. In the “Christian vs. Follower of Christ” clips, the Christian is the dork who only listens to Christian music, covers his car with Christian bumper stickers, and makes sure his suit is just right. The Follower of Christ, on the other hand, is the hipster who finds inspiration in U2, is comfortable worshipping in regular clothes, and feels like he doesn’t have to literally wear his faith on his...

The Great Deepak Chopra (note sarcasm)

“As soon as you define God you limit God. Any image of God is a limitation, because if God is infinite then God is beyond your imagination because you cannot imagine the infinite. You cannot imagine a universe that has no beginning in time, a universe that has no limits in space. God is ineffable (incapable of being expressed in words), It’s the greatest mystery in the existence. For you to define God to give him these simple qualities is to actually limit God. God is beyond good and evil. God is transcendent.” - Deepak Chopra - Nightline Face-Off Does Satan Exist Or in this post video 8 of 10 at about the 9:40 mark I found this reply absolutely amazing. I guess I can see some of his point in that I don’t think that we as humans can truly...

The Right Comparisons

This is a devotional I received from a friend from At His Feet. Whom God Uses It’s quite an intimidating list. if you think about it. Abraham the man of faith Moses the lawgiver David, a man after God’s own heart Elijah the prophet Peter the rock Paul the evangelist Heroes of our faith. God’s anointed. Role models we can never live up to. Or so we think. It is profoundly encouraging that the great examples of faith and godliness in the Bible are not really the superhuman spiritual giants we’ve traditionally made them out to be. If they were, few of us would be eligible for God’s service. We just can’t relate to their spiritual stature. Lets take another look at that list. Abraham the liar (Gen 12:13) and the impatient one...
