Why I’m Better then You
I catch myself sometimes looking at someone doing something and thinking I am better then them because…. and I know it’s not what Christ called me to. It’s hard for me to love someone when I elevate myself above them, but there is no reason for me to think that. Everything I have is from God and none of it do I deserve.
So here is a list of things I could take pride in (in a negative sense) some of them I actually struggle with and thankfully some I don’t. What are some others? Do you have any?
- I’m in good health
- I have a nice house
- I’m somewhat wise with my money
- I’m white
- I’m intelligent
- I’m athletic (somewhat)
- I’m employed
- I’m not ugly
- I have a beautiful wife and 2 amazing children
Hi, I’ve been thinking about this today too. I read Jesus’ parable about the pharisee and the tax collector this morning, probably for the zillionth time, but was still hit in the chest by the cutting-to-the-chase of the story. I wonder if thinking we’re better than others is something just those of us brought up as Christians particularly struggle with, or if it’s just human nature.
I think it’s a human thing. We have the ability to both place ourselves above others and berate ourselves and feel worthless at the same time.
Fortunately, Christ died for both ends of the spectrum.
Sadly, I think for some people “I’m a Christian” would have to be on that list. For me, I would have to add, at times, “I’m young.” Isn’t it funny how many of the things that make us feel superior are things that we have absolutely no control over?
What about I have a beautiful wife and 2 amazing children?
@BamaHippie – I think your right about those. I also think you could add “I am a republican/democrat/whatever”. To the list or “I am a conservative/moderate/liberal” or even “I’m an American”
@Red – fixed it!!!
Let’s start with grammar. “Why I’m Better Then You,” or, “Why I’m Better Than You”?
@petkat Yes, If you will notice “overwhelmingly amazing grasp of the English language” is not on my list. lol, thanks for the catch.
And “pride” is on mine. Cheers.
