Fake Christians losing their religion
Couple of interesting items popped up on the Christian Post this week: Rick Warren is warning “Fake and Passive Christians” that they aren’t going to like his church and Brian Bloye is telling his church members to “lose their religion and become true followers of Christ.” Pastor Craig Groeschel is warning “Christian Atheists” that they need to shed their hypocrisy and become true followers of Christ. The last one is my favorite, although haven’t read his book. I have two reactions when I am reading about these big name, megachurch pastors get on board with the original gospel. The first is hope that there are Christian leaders who are (hopefully) getting back to the basics and preaching the good...

The Danger of being a Double-Minded Man
James 1:5-8 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. This past Sunday, the minister spoke on the first part of James 1, primarily talking through suffering. I am really familiar with the book of James as my parents paid me at some point to memorize the entire book. As a side note, I am not sure if that move of my parents was either really bad or incredibly smart. Maybe somewhere in between, but I digress. What struck me...
A Selfless Master
Recently I watched a video of a news cast covering a nudist church and they justified their ways by saying that Jesus was naked at some of the most important points in his life, his birth, death and resurrection (and no I’m not providing a link to it). While I really don’t care about this or discussing it because I think its stupid, it did get me thinking about Jesus. The guy was amazingly selfless. Perfectly selfless even. Thinking back through how Jesus the God Man lived his life with the power to do whatever he wanted, he never used his power for his own good. He didn’t pinch his fingers and watch as the questioning pharisees choked to death (Darth Vader reference for the visual here). He didn’t disappear when those looking for him...

I get regular e-mail updates from Sojourners. I like a lot of what they have to say, I like that Jim Wallis has a voice on The Huffington Post, I tend to agree with their doctrine, for lack of a better word. Well, I guess there might be a better word: politics. I hate to say it, but that’s why I have begun to sigh when I get their e-mails. We used to subscribe to their magazine and we let the subscription lapse. I know the group’s purpose is to connect faith, politics, and culture – I mean, it’s in their tagline – so I guess it’s stupid of me to say that I feel they’re overly politicized. But when do you cross the line between helping people make faith-informed political decisions and becoming a lobbying group? I get...
