Confessions of a Blogger
My name is Travis, and I am a blogger.
I started on Livejournal in the early ’00s, but back then I didn’t really consider it real blogging. It was just a place to post my angst-ridden thoughts publicly. It wasn’t until two years ago that I decided to get a “real blog,” so I deleted my Livejournal and moved to Blogger.
Originally I wanted a place to post devotions, and share my experiences with faith and life. Then after joining 20something Bloggers I started doing more personal anecdotes. Then I started doing more politically commentary, and that’s when things started going downhill.
Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with political blogs. I’m a big fan of The Huffington Post, Rod Dreher, and Instapundit. But I got into it for the all the wrong reasons. I really didn’t care about enlightening people, or giving people an alternative media outlet, or changing the world. I just wanted more readers. I wanted to get a call from Arianna Huffington asking me to join HuffPo. I wanted to go on Fox News and argue with Bill O’Reilly. I wanted to eat lunch with Andrew Sullivan.
Have you ever done that? Did you ever do something for all the wrong reasons? Did you ever try to change yourself just so people will like you?
The Bible tells us, “The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.” (Proverbs 10:9) We cannot serve God if we wear masks all the time. We need to be honest and true to ourselves. Everything we do is for God’s glory, not ours.
So now my approach to blogging is different. It’s no longer about giving myself glory, but giving God glory.
