The Stanford study on guards, prisoners, and human behavior is absolutely fascinating, however. I saw an analysis of it in a film on IFC called, “The Human Behavior Experiments.”
I believe he is correct when he says we cannot underestimate the effect a situation has on us. I don’t take that as an excuse for being evil, though.
It’s interesting to me that the context of this vitally important discussion is a comedy show.
The context itself mocks the content of the discussion.
I forget the quote or the source, but I read recently that the best way to lead a society to degradation or destruction is to get everyone to take nothing seriously.
I’m not saying ‘doom is upon us all’ but I do think the political/intellectual/spiritual polarization, over simplification of every view and the standard reaction of mocking or laughing at everything puts the soul of our society in a perilous situation.
These topics so glibly breezed over are real complex and have eternal ramifications. To spend 5 minutes on a TV show mocks the severity of eternal life or death.
I guess I can see where your coming from, but I think that one of the things that Colbert and Stewart are gifted with is getting a point across strongly through and in the midst of comedy.

Granted I don’t think Colbert was interested in pushing a point here only refuting what the Zimbardo was saying.
